When Arkos reaches the dark unknown and finds secrets lost in history, an unexpected choice confronts him to take his long-awaited freedom or save the kingdoms that would enslave him.
The Legender draws the audience into a fantastical new world of rich characters. Beyond the excitement invoked by adventure and political intrigue, the story at its core resounds with identities redeemed and courage found, arguing that there is more to us than we ourselves would believe.

I really enjoyed reading this. I would give it a legit 3 1/2 stars. Parts of the book were really polished and had me sucked in.A few things about the book pulled me out of the story. A lot of the back story excerpts were not nearly as interesting as the main story. Maybe if they were fleshed out more I would have really liked them more but as they were they pulled me out a bit and I was glad when they were over and I was back into the main story. There was also a lengthy poem in the story that did not have a good rhyme scheme IMO. It was kind of distracting.
Those are the only negatives I had with the book. Everything else was easy to read and I was invested in the characters. The development of Arkos was excellent. The battle on the mountain top, the race at the beginning, the thorny destroyed fortress/city that Arkos set on fire, his creature that he rode on. I really enjoyed all the detail and great work Jason put into the story. I sent a copy to a friend who is a big reader. I hope he enjoyed it as much as I did.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it kept me occupied for hours on end. I normally read technical books and magazines, so this was a good break in my routine which allowed my imagination to run wild. I would have preferred the audio version because I am a slow reader and stumbled on many of the names or created words, but it wasn't available when I got the book. I look forward to the continuing series as this book stops in anticipation of things to come.
I liked this book overall... the storyline was great in itself... original, and intriguing... my main complaint is that there were a lot of words that were made up in the book, and not explain very well, if at all... sometimes I had a hard time understanding what the creatures were, for instance. also, it was a bit of a lonely book... not many deep relationships... over all, i'd give it a 70 %
The premise and plot line of The Legender are different than any other fantasy book I've read, and I really enjoyed it. It's obvious the author has a very creative imagination. I especially liked Arkos' nature and his relationship with the elements. The story begins with a lot of character building before things get moving, which makes sense since there are more books to follow, but it wasn't so slow that I struggled to finish. I was left with enough questions at the end to seek answers in Book 2.

Started well, even captured my attention in the beginning of the first chapter. It had many new interesting heroes, creatures and monsters, but… they weren't well described. Even had a few sketches of said creatures and monsters, but not placed near their first description. I really wanted to like this book too… mostly because of the promise of a cool new world, but it needs a bit more work first. It is rarely a struggle for me to finish any book, but this one succeeded.
This book is for people who enjoy the Wheel of Time series and the Kingkiller series. You do have to be someone that enjoys soaking up "world building", as there is a lot of that here.
While all the book descriptions only mention the legender himself, about 40% of the book also concurrently follows the story of a young queen and her first foray into the politics of her own court. I would probably have enjoyed more details of her upbringing that was briefly alluded to in passing, and less poetry/epics about the nations first battle of light vs dark, but hopefully some of that will come up later.
I thought it was a good read. Will get the next one when it comes out.
A near immortal with unbreakable codes of ethics and loyalty is feared and used as a pawn or scapegoat by those who would maintain or increase their power. This is a wonderful creation of a new world and new cultures that shows people in power as they frequently are corrupt, insecure, afraid of losing power, and either controlled by superstitions or controlling others with them. It's an unexpected by creative mix of political maneuvering, of magic, of loss, and of outright adventure; it quietly celebrates those who are faithful and stand against corruption and evil at great cost.
Occasionally a slow read, but on the whole it's fascinating, believable, and worth your time.
I am not one to lightly compare a fantasy author to Tolkien, for so few have succeeded in creating such vast worlds and peoples as Tolkien did, and even fewer have produced Tolkien's world-spanning mythology. Jason Link has created a vast and beautiful world, peopling it with fantastic creatures and races, while deeply respecting the spiritual underpinnings of the world he has created. While not quite the linguist that Tolkien was, Link excels at poetic description, with striking reminders of epic poetry like Milton's Paradise Lost. There were sections that wanted a bit more polish, but the overall work was truly breathtaking. If there were one negative, it would be that the next installment is not out yet, nor does it seem close. Definitely an author to keep your eye on.
